Aiello Paces UVA On Day One At Cliff Keen Invitational
LAS VEGAS –Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.) paced the Virginia wrestling team at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday (Nov. 30) by advancing to the quarterfinals, and is one of four wrestlers to advance to day two of the event. Cam Coy (Jenaette, Pa.), Sam Krivus (Greensburg, Pa.) and Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) will join Aiello in day two of competition on Saturday (Dec. 1).
Aiello upset second-seeded Nathan Traxler of Stanford on the way to the quarterfinals before dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision to No. 10 seeded Eric Schultz of Nebraska in the quarterfinals. He will face Sawyer Root of The Citadel on Saturday as he looks to place at the annual event.
Coy, who is the No. 11 seed in the event, went 3-1 on the day with his only loss coming at the hands of sixth-seeded Connor Flynn of Missouri. He will face fifth-seeded Joey Gunther of Illinois on Saturday.
Krivus went 4-1 on day one, dropping his opening match to eight-seeded Dom Demas of Oklahoma in sudden victory before rattling off four consecutive wins to advance to the second day of action. Two of his wins were bonus-point victories as Krivus posted a tech fall of Dylan Lockwood of Northern Idaho and pinned Garrett O’Shea of Air Force as part of his run through the wrestlebacks.
Schany also went 4-1 on the day, matching Krivus’ performance as he also won four consecutive matches to advance to day two. After dropping his opening bout to seventh-seeded Nino Bonaccorsi of Pittsburgh, Schany upset eighth-seeded C.J. LaFragola of Brown in a 9-2 decision before posting three straight major decisions to close out the evening.
Quinn Miller (Lilburn, Ga.) upset fifth-seeded Joseph Goodhart of Drexel in the opening round at heavyweight before having to medically forfeit the rest of the day following his second-round bout with Jake Boyd of Oklahoma. Louie Hayes, the fourth-seeded wrestler in the field at 125 pounds, went 3-2 on the day with a win over 10th-seeded Jacob Schwarm of Northern Iowa before seeing his run at the Invitational come to an end at the hands of Colby Smith of Missouri in the first consolation round of eight.
