CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s swimming and diving team won four major all-state honors for the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) inaugural all-state swimming and diving team, the organization announced on Friday (June 14).
Head coach Todd DeSorbo was named the VaSID Coach of the Year, while sophomore Paige Madden (Mobile, Ala.), senior Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) and freshman Alexis Wenger (Detroit, Mich.) received recognition of their performance this season by being named a major all-state honoree.
DeSorbo concluded his second season at the helm of the UVA women’s swimming and diving program, leading the program to its third-best NCAA finish in school history. The Cavaliers finished sixth at the national meet, earning 16 All-America honors with 12 honors coming from individual performances. The Cavaliers finished as the ACC runner-up at the 2019 conference championships and captured three ACC event titles. UVA recorded 33 All-ACC honors during the conference meet.
Madden was named the VaSID Swimmer of the Year. The four-time 2019 All-American finished second at the NCAA Championships on the 500-yard freestyle with the second-fastest time in school history at 4:32.98. She also placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle to earn first-team All-America honors, in addition to finishing 10th in the 200-yard backstroke and ninth with the 800-yard freestyle relay to earn second-team honors. Madden was the ACC runner-up in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle, and aided the 800-yard freestyle relay team in capturing ACC Championships record with a win in the event. She won UVA’s Female Play of the Year for finishing as the national runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships.
The VaSID Diver of the Year, Towbin advanced to the NCAA Championships for the fourth consecutive year, competing on the 1m board and platform. She swept the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships winning the 1m board, 3m board and the platform. Towbin captured her first All-ACC honor with a third-place finish at the ACC Championships on the platform. During the regular season, she set a school record on the 3m board and tied as the Virginia Aquatic and Fitness Center 3m board record holder with teammate Sydney Dusel.
Wenger concluded her first season with the Cavaliers as a three-time All-American. The VaSID Rookie Swimmer of the Year finished sixth at the 2019 NCAA Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke before helping the 200 and 400-yard medley relay teams to eighth place finishes. She was the ACC runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke, and placed second with the 200-yard medley relay and third with the 400-yard medley relay at the conference meet.
Additionally, Virginia won 18 first-team all-state honors as senior Towbin (diving), redshirt junior Megan Moroney (freestyle and backstroke), juniors Sydney Dusel (diving) and Morgan Hill (freestyle and butterfly), sophomores Madden (freestyle), Abby Richter (IM), Emma Seiberlich (backstroke) and Kyla Valls (freestyle), and freshmen Kaki Christensen (breaststroke) Jessica Nava (butterfly) and Wenger (breaststroke) were named to the first team, along with five of the Cavalier relay teams.
