CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team (2-1) dropped a tight dual to Campbell (3-1) by a score of 21-15 at the Aquatic & Fitness Center on Saturday (Nov. 20) as the Camels pulled away with wins at the final two weight classes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a back-and-forth battle on Saturday with the teams effectively trading scores to find themselves deadlocked at 15 after eight weight classes. Virginia got bonus-point victories from Brian Courtney at 133 and Justin McCoy at 165 pounds – Courtney won by major decision while McCoy picked up a tech fall early in the second period.

A pin by Campbell’s Austin Murphy at 174 pounds made up the difference and put Campbell on top heading into 184 pounds. Michael Battista would then pull of the upset with a  6-5 decision at 184 pounds over No. 16 Caleb Hopkins to knot the match at 15. Battista pulled even with Campbell after a review awarded him a stall point before he got an escape right before the buzzer to take the win.

Campbell would then get decisions at the final two weight classes to claim the dual.

NOTES ON THE DUAL
• Virginia is now 6-1-0 all-time against Campbell in the series between the two teams.
• Brian Courtney (133), Jon Errico (157) and Justin McCoy (165) all improved to 3-0 in dual action this season.
• Scott Kiyono (149) and Krystian Kinsey (174) both saw their first dual action of the year.

FROM HEAD COACH STEVE GARLAND
“We lost a really tight dual today that went down to heavyweight, but you have to give Campbell credit because every time we did something good, they responded. It was back-and-forth, but they won the close ones and found a way to get gritty when they needed to. We have to learn from that and that’s what we’re going to work on.”

UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia will return to action next weekend when members of the squad travel to compete at the Mat Town Open hosted by Lock Haven on Sunday (Nov. 28).
