CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (0-0) opens the 2022 season on Friday (Feb. 11) at Elon (0-0) at 4 p.m. in Elon, N.C., at Rudd Field.

MATCH NOTES

  • Friday’s game at Elon marks the opener in the 47th season for Virginia women’s lacrosse.
  • UVA has played 791 games, with a 541-245-5 all-time record.
  • The Cavaliers are 338-164 under head coach Julie Myers. Myers became just the fourth Division I head coach in history to win 300 games in 2017.

AGAINST ELON

  • Virginia and Elon are meeting for the fifth time in series history.
  • UVA leads the series 3-1 and is 1-0 in games played at Elon.
  • The two teams last met on Feb. 16, 2019, with UVA winning 11-4 at Elon.

PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA

  • Senior Annie Dyson was named a 2022 Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse.
  • Dyson, a Tewaaraton Award Top 25 nominee, was an honorable mention selection. The midfielder returns after leading the team in draw controls (56) a year ago. She was second in ground balls (34), third in caused turnovers (14) and fifth in points (35).

RETURNERS

  • Virginia returns seven starters from the 2021 season, including Dyson.
  • Senior Ashlyn McGovern is the top returning scorer for the Cavaliers, scoring 41 points on 38 goals and three assists.
  • UVA saw a talented group of first years get significant playing time in 2021. Sophomore Morgan Schwab was fourth on the team with 23 goals and 13 assists as an attacker. Sophomore Mackenzie Hoeg had 19 goals, 10 assists and 40 draw controls. Sophomore Maggie Bostain scored 15 goals and five assists, with 15 caused turnovers. Sophomore Aubrey Williams took the draw, grabbing 50 draw controls.

NEWCOMERS

  • UVA welcomes a group of eight freshmen: Rachel Clark, Abby Jansen, Shannon Garvey, Maureen Duffy, Abby Manalang, Payton Meister, Kate Miller and Morgan Koeneke.
  • The Cavaliers also add graduate transfer Meg Gordon (Northwestern) and transfer Ashley Vernon (ECU).

TEAM CAPTAINS

  • UVA’s 2022 team captains are seniors Courtlynne Caskin and Annie Dyson.

PRESEASON RANKINGS

  • Virginia is ranked No. 11 in the IWLCA Coaches Preseason Poll, Inside Lacrosse Media Preseason Poll and US Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Poll.
  • The Cavaliers were picked No. 6 in the ACC Preseason Coaches Poll.
