No. 8 Virginia Advances Three Boats to A/B Semifinals at NCAA Championship
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — No. 8 Virginia advanced all three boats to the A/B semifinals at the NCAA Rowing Championship Friday (May 26) at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, N.J.
The Cavaliers placed all three boats in the top three in their respective heats. Virginia’s win in the Varsity Four highlighted the action.
“Everyone raced well, but it will be a lot tougher tomorrow in the semifinals,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “How about that Varsity Four? What a great win for them.”
Virginia’s Varsity Eight held off Rutgers to place third in heat one with a time of 6:31.557. Washington won the heat at 6:23.367 and Princeton finished second at 6:26.987. Rutgers placed fourth at 6:35.837.
UVA’s Second Varsity Eight turned in a solid performance in heat three, finishing third behind Texas (6:40.965). Pennsylvania finished second at 6:44.428 and the Cavaliers third at 6:45.574.
The Cavaliers’ Varsity Four topped runner-up Brown 7:27.030-7:31.278 in an outstanding race in heat three. Michigan placed third at 7:42.806.
NCAA championship action continues Saturday (May 27). The Varsity Eight A/B semifinals are set for 8:36/8:48 a.m. followed by the 2V8 A/B semifinals going at 9:24/9:36 a.m. and Varsity Four A/B semifinals at 10:12/10:24 a.m. The top three finishers in each heat advance to Sunday’s grand finals, while the others race in the petite finals.
