BALTIMORE, Md. – The Virginia volleyball team (6-2) won 10 of the last 13 points in the fourth set to knock off UMBC (5-3) 27-25, 21-25, 25-19, 28-26 Sunday afternoon (Sept. 10) at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.

The Cavaliers posted 17.0 total blocks, which is good for fifth all-time in UVA program history.

Middle blocker Abby Tadder notched her first career double-double with 13 kills and a match-high 12 blocks. Lauryn Bowie (17 kills, 4 blocks) and Chloe Wilson (9 blocks) also chipped in for the Hoos.

SET 1: Virginia 27, UMBC 25
The opening period featured 10 tied scores as Virginia clung to an 18-14 lead midway through the frame. The Retrievers chipped away at the UVA lead and eventually tied the set, 25-25. Ciera Hecht put down her third kill of the set before Tadder and Wilson teamed up for a block to seal the set in favor of the Cavaliers. Bowie finished with four kills while Wilson and Tadder each made 3 blocks.

SET 2: UMBC 25, Virginia 21
Virginia stayed within striking distance of the Retrievers throughout set No. 2, eventually forcing a UMBC timeout as UVA cut the lead to one [19-20]. However the hosts scored four unanswered points after the break to set up match point. Virginia scored twice in an attempt to make a final push, but ultimately fell short as UMBC took the second set to even the match, 1-1.

SET 3: Virginia, 25, UMBC 19
Virginia and UMBC continued to keep things close in the third set as the two sides traded short scoring spurts but neither team was able to take a commanding lead. As the Retrievers pulled within one [17-16] the Hoos outscored UMBC 8-3 down the stretch to take a 2-1 advantage. Tadder finished set No. 3 with four blocks.

SET 4: Virginia 28, UMBC 26
The Cavaliers trailed 23-17 in set No. 4 but erupted on a 7-0 run to level the game. The two sides would each find themselves at match point before being knotted up again, but a UMBC service error followed by a service ace from Meredith Reeg sealed the win for the Hoos. Brooklyn Borum and Tadder both registered four kills in the final period.
