No. 3 Virginia Advances to ITA Kickoff Final

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  –  The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team (4-1) picked up a 4-1 victory against Northern Arizona (3-2) on Saturday (Jan. 27) in the opener of ITA Kickoff Weekend matches being contested at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Cavaliers won the doubles point and three of four completed singles matches to advance to Sunday’s final. Grad student Edoardo Graziani won the clinching point for the Cavaliers.

Seniors Iñaki Montes and Alex Kiefer opened the match with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Senior Jeffrey von der Schulenburg and sophomore Douglas Yaffa clinched the point with a 7-5 win at three.

In singles, freshman Dylan Dietrich powered through a 6-2, 6-2 win on court one to put UVA up 2-0. Grad student James Hopper won 6-3, 6-0 on five to put the Cavaliers ahead 3-0. After NAU took court six, Graziani closed the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at three.

Virginia will face Florida Atlantic (5-0) on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. in the championship match. The winner  will earn a spot in the 16-team field at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship being held Feb. 16-19 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
