PHILADELPHIA – The No. 5 Virginia women’s squash team (11-3) suffered a 6-2 loss against No. 7 Stanford in the final of the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference Championships on Sunday (Feb. 11) at the Arlen Specter U.S. Squash Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
Top-seeded Virginia and 2-seed Stanford both advanced to the final of the conference championship, known as the Gaynor Cup, after a pair of 9-0 victories in the group stage of the tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Seniors Meagan Best and Griffin Dewey earned the points for the Cavaliers. Best defeated Si Ma 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 12-10 at the top of the ladder, while Dewey logged an 11-5, 11-5, 11-9 win at nine. Additionally, junior Caroline Pellegrino won her exhibition match 11-8, 11-7, 11-7.
Virginia has two regular-season matches remaining on the schedule before beginning play at the CSA national championships. UVA will host No. 3 Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 17 and No. 8 Cornell on Sunday at the McArthur Squash Center.
