No. 16 UVA Wins All Five Heats on First Day at ACC Championship
RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 16 Virginia won all five of its heats on the first day of the ACC Rowing Championship Friday (May 17) morning on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C.
The Cavaliers won their respective heats in the Third Varsity Eight, Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four to advance to the grand final in each event Saturday (May 18).
“We had a solid first day of racing from all of our crews,” UVA associate head coach Kelsie Chaudoin said. “We have another big step to take as we race in the Grand Finals. The team is rallying around one another and they’re excited to test themselves again down the course tomorrow.”
UVA will seek its 14th straight ACC Rowing championship Saturday. The Cavaliers have captured 90 of the previous 100 events at the conference championship. UVA has also raced to ACC titles in 22 of the 23 ACC championship regattas.
On Friday, UVA started fast as the Third Varsity Eight cruised past Syracuse 6:51.225-6:57.717. Miami finished third and Boston College was fourth.
The Cavaliers raced past second-place Duke in the Varsity Eight (6:32.090-6:38.576) and Second Varsity Eight (6:40.480-6:48.010).
UVA’s Varsity Four dominated its race with a time of 7:30.442 to defeat second-place Syracuse (7:42.876) by more than 12 seconds. The top-seeded 2V4 completed a perfect day of racing for the Cavaliers with its win (7:36.392-7:52.602) over Notre Dame.
The Cavaliers’ Parker Cuthbertson and Paige Lane placed second behind Duke spare pair race. The Blue Devils posted a winning time of 8:21.5.
The ACC Rowing Championship concludes Saturday morning beginning at 8:05 a.m. with the Petite Final of the Third Varsity Eight race. The finals will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra (WatchESPN.com) and the ESPN App.
