CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team kicks off the 2024 season, the fourth under head coach Shannon Wells, at Old Dominion’s Quest for the Crown tournament this weekend. The Cavaliers will compete in three matches, including their season opener against Marist on Friday (Aug. 31) at 4:30 p.m. before taking part in a doubleheader on Saturday (Aug. 31) against William & Mary and the Monarchs at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

SEASON OVERVIEW

  • This year marks the 46th season of Virginia Volleyball, which held its inaugural season in 1979.
  • In 45 complete seasons, UVA is 673-766 (.468) all-time.
  • The Cavaliers are set to host 16 home matches in 2024, including the second-ever in John Paul Jones Arena against Miami on Oct. 6.
  • For the first time in program history, Virginia will face Marist (Aug. 30) and SMU (Nov. 3), which is making its ACC debut this season.
  • Head coach Shannon Wells is entering her fourth season at the helm.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Cavaliers and Marist are meeting for the very first time in program history.
  • William & Mary leads the all-time series, 21-20, but the Cavaliers are winners of the last five meetings … The Tribe’s last win over UVA was a sweep in Williamsburg in 2001 … UVA’s first-ever match was against the Tribe on Sept. 26, 1979, a loss in Williamsburg.
  • Virginia leads the all-time series with the Monarchs, 2-0 … Despite ODU having match point three times in the fifth set of last year’s contest, the Cavaliers were able to pull off a five-set comeback win in Mem Gym … ODU held its inaugural season of volleyball in the spring of 2021 after COVID-19 forced what would-have-been the Monarchs’ 2020 fall campaign … The Hoos swept the inaugural matchup, which was held in Charlottesville on Feb. 26, 2021.

VIRGINIA WELCOMES SEVEN NEWCOMERS IN 2023

  • Of UVA’s 17 players on its 2024 roster, seven of them are new to the program.
  • The Cavaliers’ roster features three transfers Kadynce Boothe (OH) from Tennessee, Kate Dean (MB) from Eastern Illinois and Elayna Duprey (OH) from Virginia Tech.
  • Virginia’s freshmen, which make up the nation’s No. 26 signing class of 2023 according to PrepDig.com, consists of Sarah Brodner (OH/RS), Zoey Dood (S), Teagan Hogan (DS/L) and Becca Wight (RS).

CAVALIERS RETURN A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE

  • Abby Tadder (MB), Ashley Le (S), Brooklyn Borum (OH) and Heyli Velasquez (DS/L) are true seniors for the Cavaliers this fall and combine for 316 career matches played across 1,091 sets.
  • Tadder (.293) currently ranks third in program history in hitting percentage.
  • In addition to Tadder, Le, Borum and Velasquez, seniors Milan Gomillion, who led the Cavaliers in digs (4.23/set) in 2023, and Duprey round out the group of seniors.

ON THE HORIZON

  • Next weekend, the Cavaliers will hold their home opener by hosting Coastal Carolina and Hofstra at the annual Cavalier Classic Tournament (Sept. 6-7).  FULL SCHEDULE
