CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 1 Virginia women’s swimming and diving team defeated No. 21 North Carolina in a dual meet on Friday, Nov. 1 at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels defeated the No. 14 Virginia men’s team.

The Virginia women swept the swim races and took all three of the top placings in four events. North Carolina won both diving events.

Junior Jack Aikins had the lone win for the men, taking the 200 Back in 1:41.61.

Women’s Notes

  • Senior Gretchen Walsh won the 50 Free (20.84) and the 100 Fly (48.43), the top times in the NCAA in both events this season. She finished the 100 Fly 4.45 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher Carly Novelline (52.88)
  • Walsh also posted a 22.96 in the 50 Back as the leadoff leg of the 200 Medley relay
  • Sophomore Claire Curzan won the 100 and 200 Back (50.54 and 1:51.84). Her 100 Back time ranks sixth on the UVA all-time best list with her 200 ranking eighth. Both times are top-five in the NCAA this season
  • Freshman Leah Hayes logged her first win of her collegiate career in the 200 IM (1:56.22). She finished third in the 200 Free (1:45.43) and the 200 Breast (2:11.64)
  • Junior Sophia Knapp won the 1000 Free with a 9:40.25, ranking fifth on the Virginia top-times list
  • Junior Aimee Canny won the 200 Free (1:44.31) and the 200 Breast (2:07.60)
  • Junior Emma Weber (100 Breast, 58.77), sophomore Tess Howley (200 Fly, 1:54.73), grad student Maxine Parker (100 Free, 48.18) and sophomore Cavan Gormsen (500 Free, 4:40.46) were UVA’s other event winners
  • Weber’s 100 Breast is the second fastest in the NCAA this season
  • The Cavaliers took the top three places in the 200 Breast, 500 Free, 100 Fly, and 200 IM, the final four events of the meet
