CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 9 Virginia won 11 of 12 races in its spring season-opening regatta at the Doc Hosea Invitational today (March 29) on Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
“I am very proud and thankful for our team effort and approach on this opening weekend,” Virginia head coach Wesley Ng said. “We were only concerned with our level of preparation, and I think we can expand that in the next two weeks.”
Virginia raced six crews (Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Second Varsity Four, Third Varsity Eight and Fourth Varsity Eight) against No. 8 Rutgers, No. 12 Syracuse, No. 16 Penn and Northeastern. No. 2 Yale also competed at the event but did not race against the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers won five of six races in the morning session. UVA defeated runner-up Syracuse in the Varsity Four (7:17.9-7:20.4), Varsity Eight (6:21.1-6:24.6), Second Varsity Four (7:18.7-7:22.4) and Third Varsity Eight (6:46.4-6:48.8). UVA added a win over Rutgers and Northeastern in the Fourth Varsity Eight.
UVA swept all five afternoon races against Penn and added another win in the Fourth Varsity Eight against Rutgers and Northeastern. UVA topped the Quakers in the Varsity Four (7:18.8-7:23.3), Second Varsity Eight (6:25.8-6:30.9), Varsity Eight (6:20.2-6:35.5), Second Varsity Four (7:15.7-7:31.5) and Third Varsity Eight (6:50.9-6:55.2). The Cavaliers’ 4V8 posted a time of 7:01 to top Rutgers (7:05.4) and Northeastern (7:35.9).
“We had notable performances against top nationally-ranked competitors and put up three of the five fastest times in the AM (1V, V4 and 2V4) and another three fastest times in the PM session (2V, V4 and 2V4),” Ng added. “We recorded 11 wins out of 12 races and more importantly came away with a clear picture of what we need to improve upon and address in this early season period.”
UVA returns to action at the Ivy League Invitational on Saturday, April 11 in Princeton, N.J.
