CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia head men’s soccer coach, George Gelnovatch, announced today (April 2) the hiring of Johnny Fenwick as an assistant coach. Fenwick joins the Cavaliers after professional playing career and a pair stints on staff at High Point.
“We are excited to have Johnny join our coaching staff knowing that he brings a wealth of soccer experience and an extensive professional playing career,” Gelnovatch said. “He has already hit the ground running within our program, and I’m confident in the positive impact that he will have.”
Fenwick arrives at UVA after spending the 2025 season at High Point as director of player development. The Panthers won the Big South title in 2025 while posting a record of 14-2-4 and advancing to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Fenwick also served as the program’s director of operations for the 2021 campaign.
“I’m so excited to be joining such a top program,” Fenwick said. “I’m very grateful to George and the staff for the opportunity to work at a school like UVA. I look forward to working with the talented group of coaches and players to help continue the success of this distinguished team.”
A standout defender and team captain at High Point from 2015-2018, Fenwick was a four-time all-conference selection, a second-team All-American and named conference defensive player of the year in his 2018 senior campaign. That season, Fenwick led his team to High Point’s first ever NCAA Championship appearance.
Following his collegiate career, Fenwick played professionally making a combined 97 starts at USL clubs including San Antonio FC, LV Lights, Tulsa, Sacramento FC, Hailstorm FC, and Asheville City.
