Virginia Head Coach Joanne Boyle
Opening statement:
“It was a hard-fought game. Florida State is a great team. I was pleased with our effort. We had a lot of people in foul trouble so we were playing with a limited bench, but there was a really good effort there tonight. We just have to build off that.”
On lack of execution towards end of game:
“We talked about it in the locker room. When you’re in a tight game like that, you have to be able to control the things you can control. Part of that is running end-of-game situations correctly. I think that really hurt us.”
On younger players getting more playing time:
“There’s a lot of good in that. We’re always going to challenge them to keep moving forward.”
On rebounding against Florida State:
“We were doing a good job until we had to go to the zone defense. The zone helped us limit their scoring so it was kind of a give and take. We just have a lack of size. Things that are easy for other teams aren’t as easy for us. When you get down the stretch and are trying to box out, you see the wear and tear on your players. We just got caught in a rut.”
Freshman Guard Mikayla Venson
On playing without Guard Faith Randolph:
“I think with Faith being out, she is a great player, so I think not only me, but everyone had to step up. Faith is a huge part of our team, but I think everyone stepped up today and did a great job. We knocked down some shots, we stayed in it, we hustled, so at the end of the day I think we stepped up and played our game. We just have to get the next one.”
On Florida State’s increased focus on her in the second half:
“It’s not frustrating because that creates opportunities for my other teammates. Trying to set screens or just any way I can try to get the ball and give someone else a good pass, that opens up opportunities for others to score.
On why Florida State opened up a lead in the last 5 minutes:
“We put in a lot of energy trying to get back into it, and I think a couple turnovers messed us up going into that being only down by one and hitting the 3.”
Freshman Guard Aliyah Huland El
On playing three difficult games in a row:
“I think it’s really important to start in practice. We hustled, we worked hard, and we competed a lot more in practice the last two days and that really made the difference today. We didn’t get the win, but it was a much more hard fought game for us.”
