CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s Izzi Weiss (Chicago, Ill.) earned a gold medal and Heidi Long (Buckinghamshire, England) and Martine van den Boomgaard (Amsterdam, Netherlands) earned silver medals at the 2018 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Poznan, Poland, on Saturday (July 28).

Weiss coxed the United States to a gold medal in the women’s four as the Americans topped runner-up Great Britain 7:02.600-7:08.970.

“We were really excited about the adding of the coxed four this year,” Weiss said. “We had no idea what to expect and no gold medal standard to train off of. We picked up a lot of speed in Princeton and were just excited to race it and see where we stacked up internationally. We couldn’t have been happier with the results. It was truly the race of a lifetime.”

Great Britain’s Long and teammate Hannah Scott earned silver in the women’s pair with a time of 7:33.690.

The Netherlands’ van den Boomgaard earned a silver medal in the women’s quadruple sculls with a time of 7:43.880. UVA junior Isabella Strickler (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), making her U-23 championship debut, and the United States placed sixth in the women’s quadruple sculls.
