No. 10 UVA Advances Two Boats to A/B Semifinals at NCAAs
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. — No. 10 Virginia advanced two boats to the A/B semifinals at the NCAA Rowing Championships Friday (May 31) at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park.
The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight each placed in the top three in its respective heats to advance to Saturday’s (June 1) A/B semifinals. The Varsity Four placed fourth in its heat and will row in the C/D semifinals.
“The V8 and 2V8 accomplished the goal of making the top semifinals with good fight,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “The next step will be formidable, but the crews are up for the challenge. The V4 had a tough race with debris and the race is under protest.”
The start of the championships was delayed until the afternoon due to overnight storms and heavy debris on the course. Repachages were cancelled and the top three finishers in each heat advanced to the A/B semifinals, while the others progressed to the C/D semifinals.
In Friday afternoon heats, UVA’s Varsity Eight placed third behind Texas (6:07.284) and Washington (6:09.394) with a time of 6:20.047.
UVA’s Second Varsity Eight finished second behind California. The Golden Bears defeated the Cavaliers 6:24.858-6:29.904.
