The award annually honors college football's most outstanding defensive player

The Maxwell Football Club announced today (Aug. 21) that Virginia’s Kam Robinson has been named to preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.

Friday’s announcement marks Robinson’s third national preseason honor, having been previously named to the Butkus Award and Nagurski Trophy watch lists. Last year, he received the second-most votes for ACC Defensive Player of the Year and was Third Team All-ACC. Robinson led the Cavaliers in tackles prior to sustaining a season-ending injury in their 34-17 road win over Duke (Nov. 15).

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck “Concrete Charlie” Bednarik who was an All-American player at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multiple year All Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. Last year’s Chuck Bednarik Award winner was Jacob Rodriguez. (Texas Tech) who went on to be the 2nd round selection of the Miami Dolphins in the 2025 NFL Draft. Rodriguez was the first Texas Tech player to win the Bednarik Award.

The Maxwell Football Club has once again partnered with Phil Steele Publications as selection committee partners. Phil Steele’s College Football Preview is generally recognized as the most complete preseason magazine in the game.
