The third-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team gets its first taste of game action in 2014 at 7 p.m. Saturday when it plays host to Rutgers in exhibition play at Klockner Stadium. The friendly also serves as the first home event on the 2014-15 UVa Athletics calendar.

The Virginia men’s soccer team dropped its exhibition opener for the 2014 season, 2-1, to Rutgers Saturday evening at Klockner Stadium..“It was good to get out and try some different things tonight,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We have a lot to work on, but we’re going to get better. We played a lot of guys and that was the plan. We wanted them to get a run and learn from this. Give credit to Rutgers; they had a good mentality and a good rotation of players in and out.” (read more)
Virginia Plays Georgetown to 1-1 Draw in Exhibition Finale

Zinkhan Golden Goal Lifts No. 3 Virginia to 1-0 OT Win over No. 25 ODU

Caldwell Called into U.S. U-20 Training Camp

Virginia freshman goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell (Todd, N.C.) has been called into to the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team’s international training camp in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 19-man team will train from Sept. 1-10. The highlighted game of the trip will include a matchup against Argentina’s U-20s on Tuesday, Sept. 9.Caldwell is one of just four current college players to earn a spot on the roster. He also has spent time with the U.S. U-17 and U-18 teams during his career. (read more)

Despite a brilliant performance from goalkeeper Calle Brown (R-Sr., Leesburg, Va.), the third-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team fell 1-0 in double overtime to Tulsa Friday evening in the Hurricane Classic, hosted at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. Cameron Drackett’s goal in the 106th minute propelled the Golden Hurricane to the victory.The Cavaliers will face No. 18 UAB Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Tulsa. The top-ranked Virginia baseball team opened the 2014 season Friday afternoon with an 8-3 loss to Kentucky in the Hughes Bros. Challenge in Wilmington, N.C. UK used a four-run fourth inning to rally from an early deficit in earning the season-opening victory.The Cavaliers had baserunners in every inning but were limited to five hits while leaving 11 runners on base, including six in scoring position. The 15th-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team won its third straight match, 1-0, over VCU Monday evening at Klockner Stadium. Sam Hayward (So., Houston, Texas) scored in the 76th minute to push the Cavaliers (4-1) to the win.“It’s a great win for us,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “VCU is an NCAA playoff team and they’re one of the better teams that we will play all year. We knew it was going to be a good game. After our emotional game on Friday night, I think in the second half tonight we ran out of gas a little bit. TThe No. 7 Virginia men’s soccer team rallied for a 1-1 draw against Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium. Playing a man down, Virginia (4-1-1, 1-0-1 ACC) scored in the 68th minute on an Eric Bird (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) goal on its way to earning a point in the ACC standings.“Given the circumstances of playing down a man for the final 45 minutes, I think we did great,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “When we went down a goal, we had to push for a goal and I think we did that. From there we just needed to make sure we were selective in our opportunities and not concede and I also think we did that. We did a great job of defending.”
Second-Half Rally Lifts Davidson to 2-1 Win over No. 2 Virginia

The second-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team dropped its first home match of the season, 2-1, to Davidson Wednesday evening in rainy conditions at Klockner Stadium. Virginia (4-2-1) scored in the first half, but Davidson (4-0-2), ranked 20th nationally by Soccer America, recorded a pair of goals just over seven minutes apart early in the second half and then held off the Cavaliers’ late charge.Virginia out-shot Davidson, 15-10, including 9-4 in the second half. It marked the second straight defeat for the Cavaliers (4-3-1, 1-1-1 ACC), while Syracuse (8-1-0, 2-1-0 ACC) claimed its fourth consecutive victory as well as its eighth shutout in nine matches.Syracuse scored off a Julian Buescher corner kick in the 31st minute as Skylar Thomas headed the ball home for his first goal of the season. Darius Madison (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) scored the equalizer late in regulation, then headed in the game winner in overtime to lift the No. 19 Virginia men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over James Madison Tuesday night at Klockner Stadium. Bird notched first-team honors, while Wharton was a third-team selection. The Virginia men’s soccer team earned the NCAA championship over UCLA Sunday afternoon following a penalty-kick shootout in front of 8,015 fans at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
