No. 10 Cavaliers Place Fifth at Clemson Invite

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 10 Virginia rowing team placed fifth overall at the two-day Clemson Invitational on Sunday (April 23) on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
The Cavaliers had six crews (Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Second Varsity Four, Third Varsity Eight A and Third Varsity Eight B) compete in the Grand Finals today.
The Cavaliers claimed the title in the Third Varsity Eight B, outdistancing second-place Oklahoma 7:23.8-7:25.8.
UVA added a second-place finish in the Third Varsity Eight and fourth-place finishes in the Varsity Four (7:24.2), Second Varsity Four (7:45.4) and Second Varsity Eight (6:43.6). The Cavaliers placed seventh in the Varsity Eight at 6:28.4.
No. 5 Texas won the invite title with 130 points to edge No. 4 Ohio State (125 points). No. 11 Wisconsin (117) placed third, followed by No. 14 Washington State (105) and No. 10 Virginia (105).
On Saturday (April 22) morning, Virginia’s Second Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight won its respective heats. The Cavaliers’ 2V4 topped Oklahoma 7:25.317-7:28.695, while the 3V8 A boat beat Ohio State 6:48.549-6:53.337.
UVA’s Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four placed second in each of its heats behind Wisconsin. The Badgers topped the Cavaliers 6:20.390-6:22.972 in the V8, 6:29.159-6:34.855 in the 2V8 and 7:06.529-7:11.761 in the V4. UVA’s 3V8 B boat placed fifth in its heat.
On Saturday evening, UVA claimed heat wins in the Varsity Four, Second Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight. The Cavaliers out-raced Oklahoma 7:17.015-7:23.927 in the V4 and topped Duke 7:22.838-7:23.848 in the 2V4. UVA defeated Indiana 6:32.495-6:34.333 in the 2V8.
The Cavaliers added third-place finishes in the V8 (6:28.247) and 3V8 A (6:40.028). UVA’s 3V8 B placed sixth in its heat at 6:58.295.
No. 4 Ohio State, No. 5 Texas, No. 10 Virginia, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 14 Washington State, No. 15 Syracuse, No. 18 Louisville, No. 19 Duke, No. 20 Indiana, Gonzaga, UCLA, Penn, Central Florida, Columbia, Cornell, Minnesota, Navy, Oklahoma, Oregon State and Tennessee and host Clemson competed in the 21-team field.
UVA hosts Texas on Saturday, April 29 at the Rivanna Reservoir.
