Swimming and Diving Names 20 to Scholar All-America Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ÃÆ’Æ‘¢ÃƒÆ’¢’¬” The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had 20 student-athletes named to the 2017 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America’s (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team, according to the CSCAA’s release on Wednesday (June 21). In addition, both the men’s and women’s program received Scholar All-America recognition for achieving a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the spring semester.
The men’s team qualified eight student-athletes for the honor as senior Matt Lockman (Charlottesville, Va.), junior Luke Georgiadis (Jacksonville, Fla.), sophomores Alex Albracht (Mission Hills, Kan.) and Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshman Ted Schubert (Ashland, Va.) earned Scholar All-America honors. Senior John Denning (Chesapeake, Va.), redshirt sophomore Brendan Casey (Santa Monica, Calif.) and freshman Kyle Ward (Bartlesville, Okla.) recorded honorable mentions honors.
The women’s team had 12 student-athletes receive the scholastic honor as seniors Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.), Shannon Rauth (Glenmoore, Pa.), Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) and Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom), juniors Jennifer Marrkand (Westford, Mass.) and Dina Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y.), sophomores Kylie Towbin (New Cannaan, Conn.) and Vivian Tafuto (Hummelstown, Pa.) and freshman Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) captured Scholar All-America honors. Senior Audrey Gould (Bethesda, Md.), junior Laine Reed (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Rachel Politi (Bexley, Ohio) recorded honorable mentions honors.
Both programs qualified for the team honor. The women’s team concluded the year with a 3.46 cumulative grade point average, while the men’s team recorded a 3.21 cumulative grade point average.
CSCAA Executive Director Joel Shinofield cited Virginia’s success, noting: “Coach Augie Busch has shown at Virginia how you can balance excellence in the classroom and the pool. We are very fortunate to have schools like Virginia and people like President Sullivan and Director of Athletics Littlepage who support these exceptional student-athletes.”
To be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a “B” time standard or competed at their respective qualifying meets.
To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the Spring semester.
