Virginia Drops Friday Night Dual At No. 6 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia (3-7, 0-2 ACC) wrestling team went on the road for the first time in ACC competition this season Friday night, dropping its dual match at No. 6 NC State (12-1, 2-0 ACC) by a score of 32-7.
Redshirt freshman Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.) and redshirt senior Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) provided the points for the Cavaliers with Hayes posting a major decision at 125 pounds and Atkinson posting a decision at 165 pounds.
With wrestling starting at 149 pounds, the Wolfpack picked up a pair of wins before Atkinson would take his decision at 165 pounds over Brian Hamann. The redshirt freshman won 3-0 over the Wolfpack’s Hamann.
NC State would then rattle off wins at four more weight classes, including a pair of technical falls, before Hayes would post his major decision at 125 pounds. Hayes won with the 19-6 major decision. It was his 10th bonus-point victory in his last 12 wins.
The Wolfpack closed out the match with wins at 133 pounds and 141 pounds as NC State’s Tariq Wilson posted the upset win over sixth-ranked Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) and second-ranked Kevin Jack of NC State capped the dual with a pin.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday afternoon, stepping out of conference to face Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
