Virginia Hosts No. 9 Virginia Tech Sunday On Senior Day

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia (4-8, 0-3 ACC) wrestling team closes out the home portion of its dual schedule on Sunday, hosting No. 9 Virginia Tech (13-2, 3-0 ACC) in a 1 p.m. contest at Memorial Gym.
Admission to all home Virginia wrestling matches is free to the public.

SENIOR DAY RECOGNITION
Sunday afternoon’s dual will be senior day for the Cavaliers and Virginia will recognize a trio of wrestlers in a ceremony 10 minutes prior to the start of the 1 p.m. match. Recognized as a part of the ceremony will be Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.), Zak DePasquale (Fairfax, Va.) and Garrett Peppelman (Harrisburg, Pa.).
CAVALIERS IN THE RANKINGS
The Cavaliers have a pair of wrestlers in the national rankings heading into the weekend, according to InterMat Wrestling. Redshirt freshman Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.) is ranked No. 15 at 125 pounds, while sophomore and returning All-American Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) is No. 9 at 133 pounds.

A LOOK AT VIRGINIA TECH
The Hokies enter Sunday’s dual meet coming off a win over No. 25 North Carolina last weekend. Virginia Tech is 3-0 in the ACC with wins over Duke, Pittsburgh and the Tar Heels to this point of the season. Looming is a showdown with No. 6 NC State next weekend. The Hokies have wrestled in 15 duals, including three duals against opponents in common with the Cavaliers. Both squads wrestled Old Dominion, No. 10 Arizona State and No. 4 Missouri this season. Both squads went 1-2 in those three meetings with losses to the Sun Devils and Tigers, while both squads beat Old Dominion.
COMMONWEALTH CLASH MATCH
The Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529 is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams at University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 21 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11 points or more will be crowned the winner and take home the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash trophy. UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia will close out the dual portion of the schedule on Friday, Feb. 16, when the Cavaliers take on the Pittsburgh Panthers. The dual at Pittsburgh is set for a 7 p.m. start at the Petersen Events Center.
