Six Cavaliers to Compete at World Rowing U-23 Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Six University of Virginia rowers will compete at the 2018 World Rowing Under-23 Championships on July 25-28 at Lake Malta in Poznan, Poland.
 
Current Cavalier rowers Heidi Long (Buckinghamshire, England), Isabella Strickler (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Izzi Weiss (Chicago, Ill.) and former rowers Morgan Rosts (Jordan, Ontario), Ellie Stewart (London, England) and Martine van den Boomgaard (Amsterdam, Netherlands) will represent UVA and their respective countries in the five-day regatta.
 
Strickler (4x) and Weiss (4+) will compete for the United States, while Long (2-) and Stewart (8+) will compete for Great Britain. Rosts (8+) will row for Canada and van den Boomgaard (4x) will represent the Netherlands.
 
Rosts and Canada claimed gold in the women’s eight at last year’s U-23 World Rowing Championships in Bulgaria, while van den Boomgaard placed fifth in the women’s quad. Stewart and Long were also part of the sixth-place women’s eight Great Britain crew. Long stroked Great Britain to a silver medal in the women’s eight in 2016.
 
Rosts also extended UVA’s streak of having at least one student-athlete on the gold-medal winning women’s eight at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships to eight consecutive years.
 
Weiss and Strickler are making their U-23 championships debuts this year.
 
Long, Stewart and Weiss were part of the ACC champion Varsity Eight, which also finished seventh at the NCAA Championships. The trio also earned All-ACC first-team honors. Strickler, van den Boomgaard and Rosts were part of the ACC champion Second Varsity Eight, which earned a bronze medal at the NCAA Championships. Rosts was also an All-ACC second-team selection.
