O’Connor, Early and Teel Take Home Top VaSID Honors
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID) named Brian O’Connor the state’s Baseball Coach of the Year for the third time in the last four seasons. Starting pitcher Connelly Early was named the state’s Pitcher of the Year and catch Kyle Teel collected Player of the Year honors.
A total of nine Cavaliers garnered VaSID All-State honors, the most of any program in the state. Teel, 1B Ethan Anderson, 3B Jake Gelof, SS Griff O’Ferrall, OF Ethan O’Donnell, Early and RP Jay Woolfolk all took home first team honors. Starting pitchers Brian Edgington and Nick Parker were both listed on the second team.
O’Connor collected his 12th VaSID Coach of the Year award in 20 seasons at Virginia. Recently announced as part of the 2024 ABCA Hall of Fame Class, O’Connor led Virginia to its sixth College World Series and second in three years. The Cavaliers won the outright ACC Coastal Division Championship for the first time since 2011 and were one of five NCAA teams in 2023 to win 50 games. The Cavaliers were a consensus top-8 team in the final national rankings.

Early, a fifth-round selection of the Boston Red Sox in the 2023 MLB Draft, was second in the country with 12 wins on the mound, also matching UVA’s single-season record. He was also recognized as an All-American by NCBWA (First Team), Perfect Game (Second Team) and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (Third Team). Along with Edgington he was a Third Team All-ACC selection.
Teel finished his UVA career as the most decorated catcher in program history and was the 14th overall selection in this year’s MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox. Teel was the first UVA player to win the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award. After batting .407 with 13 home runs and 69 RBI at the plate, he was a consensus First Team All-American and the first Cavalier to be named a first team All-American by six different publications.
