Former Cavalier captain Kam Butler joined head coach Tony Elliott’s staff as a Defensive Analyst for the 2025 season.

Butler played defensive end for the Cavaliers from 2023-25 after transferring to Virginia from Miami (Ohio) prior to the 2023 season. He chose to return to college football for a seventh season in 2024 when he received a medical redshirt for a season-ending shoulder surgery in 2023. His playing experience at the collegiate level was unparalleled, appearing in 66 games, including all 26 he appeared in at UVA and totaled nearly 3,800 collegiate snaps. At the conclusion of the 2024 season, Butler’s 24 career sacks were the eighth-most among active college football players. He amassed 215 tackles, 43 tackles for loss, seven forced fumbles and an interception as a collegian.

In his final season at UVA, Butler was voted as one of five captains by his teammates at the conclusion of the year. He was named the team’s Defensive Impact Player of the Year and was also the recipient of the program’s H.E.A.R.T. Award. While at Miami (Ohio) he earned All-Mid-American Conference honors in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He garnered a First Team Mid-American distinction in 2021 when he totaled 53 tackles and a team-high 14 tackles for loss, eight sacks and three forced fumbles.

He graduated from the University of Miami (Ohio) with a degree in Sport Leadership and Management in 2022. At UVA he earned his master’s degree in Higher Education. He was both an All-ACC and All MAC All-Academic honoree over the course of his career.
