UVA Falls to Louisville 34-17

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia was unable to pick up its first conference win on Saturday as it fell 34-17 to Louisville at Scott Stadium.

The Cavaliers scored the first 10 points of the contest in the first quarter but were held scoreless in the second and fourth quarters. QB Brennan Armstrong threw for 313 yards with one rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown. UVA managed just six yards rushing, while the Cardinals ran for 198 yards and threw for 475.

UVA spread the ball around to seven different wide receivers. WR Keytaon Thompson led the charge with nine catches for 98 yards. WR Dontayvion Wicks finished with 69 yards and WR Lavel Davis, Jr. had 52 yards.

Defensively, LB Nick Jackson led UVA with 11 tackles. DB Antonio Clary and DB Anthony Johnson each had interceptions.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• PK Will Bettridge converted a 47-yard field goal on UVA’s first drive of the game.

• DB Anthony Johnson came away with an interception on Louisville’s second drive, to give the Cavaliers the ball back on their own 38. Armstrong connected with Wicks for a 40-yard touchdown reception that gave UVA a 10-0 lead just under 10 minutes into the first quarter.

• Louisville scored two touchdowns and two field goals to go ahead 20-10 with 10:35 to play in the third quarter.

• Virginia drove 75 yards in eight plays, finishing with an 11-yard touchdown run by Armstrong to cut the lead to 20-17.

• In the fourth quarter, UVA had a chance with the ball on Louisville’s five but came up just short of the first down to turn it over on downs.
