Aaron Roussell was named the University of Virginia’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach on April 7, 2026. Roussell, who became the seventh head coach in the program’s history, spent the last seven seasons at the University of Richmond, leading the Spiders to a 148-72 record and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Richmond won the 2024 Atlantic-10 Tournament and captured back-to-back outright regular-season A10 championships in 2024 and 2025.

Virginia is Roussell’s (roo-SELL) fourth stint as a collegiate head coach. Over the past 22 seasons, he has compiled a career record of 460-194 spanning stops at Division III Chicago (2004-2012), Bucknell (2012-2019) and Richmond (2019-2026). As he did at Richmond, Roussell guided Chicago to four of its appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament as well as Bucknell to two of its four appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

At Richmond, Roussell inherited a program that had endured four consecutive losing seasons and an NCAA Tournament drought dating back to 2005. After his inaugural season at the helm that saw a 15-17 finish, Roussell led the Spiders to their first winning season (13-9) in six seasons in 2020-21 followed by a 16-14 record in 2021-22.

Beginning in 2022-23, Roussell steered the Spiders to four consecutive 20-win campaigns. The 2022-23 squad went 21-11 and advanced to the WNIT Second Round. His 2023-24 team took home first place in the Atlantic 10 after a 29-6 regular season, was crowned A10 Tournament Champions and earned the program’s first bid to the NCAA Tournament in 19 years.

The following two seasons featured consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament reaching the Second Round and First Four respectively. His 2025 team notched the program’s first-ever tournament win, a 74-49 victory over Georgia Tech before falling to No. 1 seed and eventual Spokane Regional 1 Champion, UCLA, in a second-round game which was tied at halftime. For his efforts, Roussell was twice named the Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year.

During his tenure at Richmond, Roussell also oversaw the development of All-America honorable mention forward, Maggie Doogan, who recorded 2,138 career points to rank second in program history at Richmond and sixth in the history of the A10 conference. In her 2025-26 senior season, Doogan netted 692 points set a program record at Richmond and her 48-point game in an overtime win over Davidson set a program record and marked the highest scoring game of any NCAA Division I Player that season.

Doogan was named A10 Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2025, 2026). She was also named an All-America honorable mention by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and a Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association All-America honorable mention in 2026.

Proved at revitalizing programs, Roussell transformed Bucknell after inheriting a team with just one winning season in the previous five years. Over seven seasons at the helm, he led the Bison to a 151-72 record, Patriot League tournament championships in 2017 and 2019, and regular-season titles in 2016, 2017 and 2019. Roussell’s success earned him Patriot League Coach of the Year honors twice.

His first head coaching stint was eight seasons at Division III Chicago, where Roussell compiled a 161-50 record. His teams made four appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament reaching the third round twice and making one trip to the national quarterfinals. He was named University Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2008, 2011 and 2012, while earning WBCA Regional Coach of the Year Honors in 2011 and 2012.

Roussell graduated from Iowa in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications and political science. He earned his master’s degree from Minnesota State in sports administration in 2004.

Roussell and his wife, Molly, have a son, Riley, and two daughters, Kelsey and Kendall.
